Job Description

Location : Albuquerque (local candidates or with a connection to the area strongly preferred)

Sorry, no Hybrid or Remote: we’re looking for an on site, hands-on, all - in passionate Leader.

About St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP): Founded in Paris in 1833, the Society of SVDP is a worldwide community of more than 800,000 lay Catholics, known as Vincentians, who join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to neighbors in need.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul of the USA (SVDP-USA) harnesses the power of community and partnerships to feed, clothe, house and heal individuals and families in our community who have nowhere else to turn for help. SVdP-USA provides more than $1.7 billion in aid to more than 5 million people every year. In the US, 90,000 volunteer members (Vincentians) are women and men who are compelled by our Catholic Christian faith to serve those who are needy and suffering. From rental assistance and homelessness prevention, to thrift stores and food pantries, to disaster recovery and charitable pharmacies, we share our time and treasure with those who need help and hope. We believe everyone deserves a fair chance at a bright future, regardless of income or life circumstances.

About the Position: As the first paid, professional Executive Director (ED), you’ll provide vision, leadership, and direction to fulfill SVDP’s mission: to act as a network of friends, inspired by Gospel Values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships, with and in service to people in need. Under the guidance of the Council President (~ Board Chair) you’ll be a spokesperson, fundraiser and advocate for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Your references will attest to your skills as a dynamic leader with a strong commitment to Catholic values and proven experience in nonprofit management. To ensure the organization’s effective operation and growth, you’ll oversee the day-to-day operations, strategic direction and fiscal management of the organization. You’ll build intentional relationships with the staff, volunteers, board and donors – all those who ensure the effective implementation of the mission. As the successful candidate, you’ll have demonstrated exceptional experience in general management and administration: by managing the operations, finances, people and infrastructure of a nonprofit with at least $1M in revenues. Your documented success as a steward of funds raised and shared with those who need them, along with interpersonal effectiveness, fundraising, strategic planning and public relations are integral to this position. You’ll report to the SVDP-ASF Board President and oversee a thrift store staff of 16 to 18 people, including two experienced managers.

About the Opportunity : As the incoming ED, you’ll benefit from years of toil by committed volunteers called Vincentians, in conferences across Archdiocese. The Council Leadership have shepherded SVdP-ASF to the point that the need for a professional Executive Director is immediate. For the right person, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take the helm of a promising SVdP and leverage the unique window in which to do even more good. You’ll also benefit from the national and regional trainings and conferences, training and support with like-minded peers thanks to the efforts of a seasoned national parent organization. In our experience, opportunities such as these come up infrequently, every ten, twenty or thirty years .

Responsibilities : As the successful candidate for Executive Director, you’ll bring a proven track record of experience performing all or most of the functions outlined below:

Board Liaison

  • Assist the board in the operation, administration, planning and implementation of goals.
  • Maintain open communication with the board, disclosing conditions and organizational needs in a timely way.
  • Build, sustain and strengthen all board functions, e.g. meetings, policy compliance and committee work -- including supporting conferences in their special works and programs
  • Identify new projects and initiatives to address unmet organizational improvements.

Financial Management

  • Develop and maintain a business model that produces exceptional mission impact while sustaining financial health
  • Prepare the annual budget; ensure current understanding and interpretation of financial statements, budgets, cash flow, audits, and 990 tax returns;
  • Ensure a clean annual financial audit, and file appropriate fiscal and activities reports as required by relevant societal, ecclesiastic and governmental authorities
  • Use ServWare to develop reports and conduct trend analysis to inform financial planning.

Community Relations and Fund Development

  • Develop and maintain solid relationships with conference leadership, nonprofits, religious and public organizations, donors, government, and community-at-large to ensure services and funding relationships are robust enough to meet/exceed strategic goals and objectives
  • Develop and maintain branding and marketing strategy that includes social media, newsletters, public appearances, and website in alignment with SVdP-ASF’s mission
  • Maintain positive relations with the regional and national councils of SVdP Society’s local parishes and the conferences within the Archdiocese of Santa Fe
  • Create a culture where fundraising is valued and supported by the entire staff and board.
  • Prepare accurate and timely analyses to capture and communicate income and expense variances and trends.

Technology, Human Resources and Facilities

  • Ensure proper IT solutions are in place for fundraising, collaboration, document creation and storage, communication, productivity and record keeping for the present and the future.
  • Retain a diverse, highly qualified staff and volunteers through excellent recruitment, onboarding, retention and professional development.
  • Ensure building and its services meet the needs of occupants, overseeing maintenance, safety, security and overall functionality.

Compliance and Best Practices

  • Comply with SVdP’s Rule, bylaws & policies, as well as relevant legal and ethical standards.
  • Ensure SVdP-ASF meets the highest standards possible for its field, region and constituents
  • Keep abreast of any changes or updates to the Society’s governance recommendations.

Requirements : In addition to the above, you’ll have these minimum qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, Social Services, or a related field or equivalent experience is required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of nonprofit leadership experience, including responsibilities for people management, operations, financial management, budgeting, resource allocation, fiscal integrity, compliance, fundraising, public relations and strategic planning.
  • Previous general management experience as an Executive Director strongly preferred.
  • Experience in Catholic or faith-based organizations strongly preferred. Due to the nature of this position, it is strongly preferred that the incumbent be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing who is registered and active in a parish.
  • Must have a strong commitment to the mission and values of the SVdP Society; ideally, an active Vincentian.
  • Demonstrated success in securing major gifts, grants, and developing and executing a diverse funding strategy.
  • Excellent communication, public speaking, and superior interpersonal effectiveness, internally and externally.
  • Inspiring communication and fundraising skills, including large events, donor meetings, interviews with the media.
  • Exceptional emotional intelligence, e.g. ability to read a room, with the singular ability to winsomely cultivate unity and harmony across a broad range of interests, objectives, concerns and personalities.
  • Strategic thinker with strong organizational management skills, including the ability to continually increase effective and efficient use of finite resources.
  • Knowledge of local and national social services systems, Catholic teachings, and an understanding of community needs.
  • Stable work history: no change of employers in less than two years without reasonable explanation.
